Keywords:
phonetics, assimilation, Arabic language.Abstract
The scholars of Arabic language in the fourth century showed an obvious interest in studying morphological and phonetic issues. Ibn Jinni, who died (392 AH), was well-known for this interest. This paper intends to investigate his opinion regarding the minor assimilation, as he called it. This review revealed the depth of his phonetic vision of this phenomenon. Its manifestations are represented by the slanting, the fa’ (fat’al), the letter of superiority, the vowel letter, and the weakening of the case movement. The paper concluded with a summary of the most important aspects of his views and a conclusion of his main results.
